The Capital is wet

3.27.2011

I absolutely love this weather. What a good way to spend Sunday - sleeping in, drinking Woollies Cappuccinos, reading trashy novels.

The downside of this is that the Park Acoustics gig for today was cancelled :-( but Nature always has the last say...
I also feel a bit of Autumn in the air. Love this mild weather - finally being able to sleep under the duvet at night, starting to layer clothes, use more moisturizer, wearing hats and coats - much more fun than skimpy summer clothes and always being too hot!

Took this photo a few years ago with my Canon film SLR.

Market Morning

3.20.2011

Went to the Hazel Food Market yesterday morning. I remember its early days in a small parking lot with only a few food stalls. Now it is in a much better location and it grew substantially. I'm impressed with the quality of the food, the friendliness of the vendors and the park-like feel of the new location.
Bought amazing lemon-garlic olives, filter coffee and a choc-mint muffin. Would've loved to buy one of the amazing Italian Rye breads there but it somehow slipped my mind...

PS: Tomorrow is a public holiday! Have a good long weekend.

Haven't been to any of these gigs but so glad something cool is happening in the Capital! And also at our beautiful Botanical Gardens...looking forward to a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Please spread the word, we need more support for cool gigs like these.

Anyone who has enjoyed this amazing movie will like this. National Geographic Channel and a team of scientists, engineers, and two world-class balloon pilots successfully launched a mock-up house 800 coloured weather balloons from a private airfield east of Los Angeles, and set a new world record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted.

The end of an era

3.06.2011

I cannot remember exactly when this cute little food / lifestyle shop opened but it was around 2004. For a change, LiBel was a non-franchise shop with good food and lovely decor inspiration. It was situated on a rather busy intersection in Sunnyside: Johnston and Jorissen. I used to spend countless hours there, indulging in Lienkie's amazing chocolate brownies and experimental cooking. This was mainly the place for the girls to talk about matters of the heart and share a few gossips. The sidewalk was filled with wonky, twig furniture, comfortable cushions and colourful, nostalgic tableware.
After we returned from Argentina, LiBel was no more. I hoped maybe it was just a revamp but alas! It seems like this space will now be occupied by a "surgery".

I sometimes wonder what we are doing wrong in this city. I see many shops and creative individuals with so much potential not making it here. Why has our CBD not gone through urban regeneration like Cape Town, Joburg and Durban? Does the Capital have too much bureaucracy and red tape? Or are we just not trying hard enough?
